SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Michael Antoniewicz era opened with Upstate Men's Soccer hosting Georgia State for their season opener at the County University Soccer Stadium with the opening match ending in a 2-2 finish.
Upstate opened the first half swiftly with Lucas Bergfors connecting with Oscar Kelly for the first goal of the Michael Antoniewicz era along with Kelly's first collegiate goal. Georgia State looked to even the playing field responding to the quick start from the Spartans with a tying goal. Upstate's offense continued to put the Panthers on their heels attacking with multiple shots ultimately with the following three being off target. As the first half advanced, the Panthers found a hole in the Spartan defense being able to take the lead in the final two minutes of the first half with their second goal from Matt Taylor. With many second half adjustments, Upstate proved to be ready to take the pitch and find their way back. Lucas Bergfors displayed his speed sprinting past the defense and taking on the keeper by himself for his first collegiate goal tying the match at two apiece. As the second half built more anticipation, the Panthers looked to respond with hopes of regaining the lead, but the reflexes of Sophomore Goalkeeper, Jarrett Wuerslin was enough to keep the score tied at two. With one last opportunity to seal the game, an offside call against the Panthers ended the game in a draw.
