CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Entering a new month of September, the Big South Conference announced the player of the week honors for the week of Monday, Aug. 25 through the week of Sunday, Aug. 31 where Jarrett Wuerslin and Oscar Kelly represented Upstate Men's Soccer was represented well winning the weekly awards in two out of three categories for Defensive and Freshman of the Week.
Big South Defensive Player of the Week: Jarrett Wuerslin
The Sophomore from Charlotte, North Carolina has come to Upstate and trusted the coaching of Goalkeepers' Coach, Tony Vu through preseason and the first four matches of 2025 campaign. In the matchup against the University of South Carolina, Wuerslin logged 90 minutes adding three saves in goal against 23 shots faced. With Upstate leading 2-1 in the last six minutes of the match, Wuerslin made two consecutive saves that iced the offense of the Gamecocks pushing the Spartans ahead for the first win of the season along with his first win in goal. Through four matches, Jarrett Wuerslin has accumulated 15 saves with a 0.625 save percentage and a 2.25 goals-against average. The Spartans will continue to be optimistic with the growth of Wuerslin as he adds his first weekly of the season followed by this being Men's Soccer second weekly honor of the season.
Big South Freshman of the Week: Oscar Kelly
The Freshman from Manchester, England has started his collegiate career in the best way possible scoring three goals through four matches played. In the win against the University of South Carolina, a costly foul from the Gamecocks in the box tasked Kelly with putting the Spartans in the driving seat with a penalty kick. In front of 4,000+ fans, Kelly did not waste the moment by successfully converting the PK putting Upstate ahead ultimately sealing the match for the first win of the season. Oscar Kelly has added three goals on, seven total shots (four shots on goal), and a .571 shot on goal percentage. As Head Coach, Michael Antoniewicz continues to put full trust into him developing and growing, Oscar Kelly will continue to catch opponents' attention adding his first weekly honor of the season along with Upstate Men's Soccer third weekly honor.
