- Title:
- Assistant Coach
Former USC Upstate track athlete Eric Chapman is in his first season as the Volunteer Assistant Coach for the Spartan track and field program working primarily with the throwers.
Chapman competed as a thrower for Upstate from 2009-11 and currently ranks second all-time in the indoor weight throw, and outdoor hammer and discus throws. He joins the Spartans after spending the last year working with Event Timing Solutions as an Event Timing and Management Specialist.
“I am proud to be back with the Spartans and helping out a program I invested so much of myself and watched grow and build from the early beginnings,” he said. “I am privileged to have the opportunity to play a more active role, than I could have previously as an athlete, in helping the program continue to grow in the future.”
Chapman joined Upstate as a junior walk-on in 2008 as the program was just in its infancy stages. During his time as a Spartan, Chapman earned two A-Sun Athlete of the Week accolades, one indoor and one outdoor, and set a new Furman Invitational hammer throw record after finishing first in the event. He had a fourth place finish in the weight throw at the 2010-11 A-Sun Indoor Track Championships and followed that with a pair of top-5 performances during the 2011 A-Sun Outdoor Track Championships in the discus and hammer throws.
He graduated from Broome High School in Spartanburg where he was a standout offensive lineman on the football team. Chapman was a member of the 2004 state championship team at Broome. He was named Preseason All-State in 2005 and, following the season, was named All-Region and All-State. Chapman also lettered in track and was named All-Region and All-Conference as a senior.
Chapman graduated from USC Upstate in 2012 with a degree in education with an emphasis in exercise and sport science.
