Campbell entered the game with an unblemished record in the A-Sun and remained at the top of the league with a 7-0-0 record and 21 points. The Camels stand 9-5-0 overall on the year. Upstate fell to 1-13-0 overall and 0-6-0 in the league.
The game was a defensive struggle in the first half with both teams preventing the other from putting together any serious scoring opportunity. Campbell played four shots in the first half, but only one was placed on goal and was saved by Upstate keeper Peter Davis. Upstate got off two shots with one being placed on goal. Campbell keeper Aaron Johnson made the save on the one shot on goal as the game entered halftime at a scoreless tie.
Campbell is a second half team, entering Thursday night's game averaging two more shots in the second half than the first and scoring nine more goals, 16-7, in the second period over the first. The Camels proved that trend true early on in the second 45 minutes of play when Khalil Johnson played a pass to Vince Petrasso in the right corner. Petrasso moved toward the goal and drew Davis toward the ball before playing a cross to the far side of the goal where Kyle Proctor put the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute.
Campbell essentially put the game away with a goal in the 71st minute. Ben York gained control of the ball after a pass from the middle. York made several moves before taking a shot that was deflected by Davis. However, the ball fell at the feet of Jason Keever who put the shot away in the open net to give the Camels a 2-0 lead. Campbell added a goal two minutes later when Bryan Dornseif scored off an assist from Brian Urioste to make the score 3-0.
Campbell outshot Upstate 13-6 for the game, placing nine shots on goal. Davis saved six shots on the night. Upstate placed three of its six shots on goal and Johnson made all three saves to record the shutout for the Camels.
