Florida Gulf Coast scored two goals in each half to ease to a 4-0 victory over USC Upstate Friday night in A-Sun women's soccer action at County University Soccer Stadium.
FGCU improved to 9-3-3 overall and 4-1-3 with 15 points in the A-Sun. Upstate fell to 3-13-0 overall and 1-8-0 with three points in the league.
Florida Gulf Coast didn't take long to crack the scoreboard in the game, scoring in the second minute off of a corner kick. After the Eagles took the corner and played the cross into the box, Amanda Goble headed the ball toward the goal, but the shot was saved by Upstate keeper Brittany Daughtry. However, the ball deflected off of Daughtry and Gina Petracco gained control of the ball and put the shot into the empty net to give FGCU a 1-0 lead.
Florida Gulf Coast made it a 2-0 advantage in the 37th minute when Casey Lademann took control of the ball and lifted a shot towards the upper left 90. The ball scooted just under the cross bar and over the outstretched hands of Daughtry.
Florida Gulf Coast put the game away with a pair of goals within the first 18 minutes of the second half. Lindsay Haw took the ball and moved in from the right, drawing the new Upstate keeper, Samantha Spradley, off her line. She slid a pass to Amber McCall who put the shot away into the open goal for a 3-0 lead in the 49th minute. The Eagles made it a 4-0 lead in the 57th minute when Lademann scored her second goal of the game when Haw moved in from the right and fed Petracco who took a shot from eight yards out. Spradley managed to make the save, but the rebound came down to Lademann who put the shot away.
FGCU outshot Upstate 19-6 for the game. The Eagles placed 13 shots on goal. Spradley led Upstate with six saves on the night. Upstate placed five shots on goal with Eagle keepers Stephanie Powers and Kirsi Keenan combining for four saves to record the shutout. FGCU was also credited with a team save.
