The USC Upstate women's soccer team allowed what proved to be the game-winning goal just 5:02 into the match en route to a 5-0 loss at ETSU on Monday afternoon. ETSU improves to 4-10-0 overall and 3-3-0 in league play while Upstate falls to 0-15-0 on the season and 0-5-0 in Atlantic Sun play.
ETSU's Tori Head scored the first goal of the match and it was the first of the season for the forward. Head was assisted on the goal by teammate Kim Jones. The Bucs extended their lead to 2-0 in the 19th-minute when Kelly Brinkman connected on her shot from 25 yards out. Brinkman's goal was her second of the season.
Jordan Monty extended the lead to three when Jordan Monty put her shot in the box past Upstate keeper Brittany Daughtry. Terri Miller, who scored her third goal of the season, pushed the score to 4-0 in the 79th-minute with a shot from inside the box.
Genna Peterson set the final margin at 5-0 when she scored her first goal of the season in the 84th-minute. Peterson was assisted on the goal by Jordan Monty.
Upstate goal keeper Brittany Daughtry got the start in goal and played 75 minutes. Daughtry allowed three goals while recording five saves. Freshman Sian Jenkins played the final 15 minutes allowing two goals and tallying one save.
ETSU, like Upstate, used two keepers in the match. Megan Masch played the majority of the match and recorded five saves. Teammate Caitlin Gaughan played the final 12:48 and recorded three saves.
In the match, ETSU owned an advantage of 24-15 in shots and an 11-8 advantage in shots on goal. The Bucs took 10 corner kicks in the match compared to two for the visiting Spartans.
The Spartans will return to the pitch on Friday when they host Kennesaw State at County University Soccer Stadium. Kickoff between the Spartans and the Owls is slated for 5:00 p.m. Following Friday's match, Upstate will host Mercer on Sunday at 3:00 p.m., the Spartans match with the Bears will be the final home match of 2009 for Upstate.
