Spartans Fall to First-Place Owls

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - USC Upstate allowed a goal within the first four minutes of the match and Kennesaw State went on to defeat the Spartans by a score of 5-0. With the victory, the Owls, who are perched atop the Atlantic Sun standings improve to 8-5-0 overall with a 6-2-0 mark in league play. Meanwhile, Upstate now owns a 0-16-0 record and a 0-7-0 record in the A-Sun.

KSU got on the board at the 3:58 mark when Upstate defender Catherine Nolff accidentally headed the ball into the goal on an attempted clear. The Spartans seemed to have the Owl attack in check but a goal by Katie Scott in the 35th-minute set the halftime score at 2-0.

KSU posted three second half goals en route to the victory over the Spartans. In the 55th-minute Kristin Marietta scored from 20 yards out to give the Owls a 3-0 advantage. Kristin Kranick scored the final two goals for the visiting Owls. It was the third and fourth goal of the season for Kranick.

In the match Kennesaw State outshout the Spartans by a count of 24-3. The Owls recorded 11 shots on goal compared to just two for Upstate. The Owls also owned an advantage of 11-0 in corner kicks.

Upstate used a pair of keepers in the match. Senior Brittany Daughtry played the first 69:12 of the match while Sian Jenkins played the final 20:48. Daughtry recorded four saves while Jenkins tallied two.

For Kennesaw, Staci Pugh played the entire match between the pipes. She recorded two saves while allowing zero goals. Each team committed six fouls in the match and KSU owned an 11-4 advantage in offside calls.

Upstate will return to action on Sunday when they host Mercer in the 2009 home finale. Kickoff between the Spartans and the Bears is slated for 3:00 p.m.
