Spartans Up-ended in Home Finale

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The USC Upstate women's soccer team, playing its final home contest of 2009, fell to the visiting Mercer Bears by a score of 2-0. Due to unplayable field conditions at County University Soccer Stadium, the match took place at the Upstate Soccer Practice Complex. With the victory, Mercer improves to 8-6-2 overall and 4-4-1 in conference, while Upstate now owns a 0-17-0 record and 0-8-0 in league play.

Upstate and Mercer appeared to be battling to a scoreless draw at the half, however Sara Elliot's goal in the 36th-minute broke the scoreless tie. Elliot was assisted on her fifth goal of the season by teammate Kacie Hudson.

The goal by the Bears set the halftime margin at 1-0. Mercer tacked on its second and final goal of the match in the 64th-minute. Emerald Phillips scored her fourth goal of 2009 and was assisted by Meghan O'Rourke. Phillips' goal set the final margin at 2-0.

In the match, Mercer owned a 22-10 edge in shots, with nine of those being on target, compared to just six for the Spartans. The Bears also owned the advantage in corner kicks at 10-0.

Playing in her final home match of her career, senior Brittany Daughtry tallied seven saves in the match. Mercer keeper, Jean Worts recorded six in Sunday's match.

Both teams committed 13 fouls in the match. Also Mercer was whistled for seven offsides compared to one for the Spartans.

Upstate will conclude the 2009 campaign next weekend. They will travel to DeLand, Fla. for a match with Stetson on Friday night, followed by the season finale next Sunday in Ft. Myers, Fla. when they face Florida Gulf Coast.
