Campbell scored two late first half goals and went on to take a 4-1 victory over USC Upstate in A-Sun men's soccer action Thursday night at Eakes Soccer Complex.
With the loss, Upstate fell to 3-5-1 overall and 0-1-1 with a point in the A-Sun. The loss also ended Upstate's Division I era three-game non-losing streak. The Spartans travel to Mercer Saturday night for a 7:00 pm start. Campbell improved to 3-6-1 overall and 2-0-1 with seven points in the league.
Upstate and Campbell fought back and forth throughout the first half and played nearly 40 minutes before the Camels broke through with a pair of goals in a 28 second span, both off the foot of Khalil Johnson. Justin Smith fed Johnson and Johnson fired a shot into the net for a 1-0 Camel lead in the 41st minute. Just 28 seconds later, Johnson scored with a left-footed shot through the middle of the box.
Campbell took a 2-0 lead into the intermission having outshot Upstate 12-3 in the half.
Campbell opened a 3-0 lead in the 61st minute when Johnson notched his third goal of the game off an assist from Vince Petrasso and Keegan Terry.
Upstate got on the board in the 62nd minute when Tim Bailey scored his first collegiate goal from the top of the box to get the Spartans within two, 3-1. Campbell, however, answered in the 81st minute on a goal by Bryan Dornseif.
Campbell finished the game with a 19-6 shot advantage. Upstate goalkeeper Pat Regna led the defensive effort for the Spartans, recording four saves on the night.
