Rain Cancels First Two Days Of Winthrop/adidas Classic

March 13, 2009

Spartanburg, S.C. - The first two days of the Winthrop/adidas Classic were cancelled due to heavy rain that blanketed the Rock Hill area Friday and is scheduled to dump at least a half inch Saturday. With the rain and the first two days of the tournament cancelled, the schedule has been all but scuttled for the weekend.

Upstate will attempt to salvage some games this weekend as Brown and Ohio will travel to Spartanburg to play games on Sunday. The first game of the day will pit Upstate against Brown, tentatively scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. start. The second game of the day pits Brown against Ohio, tentatively scheduled at 1:00 p.m. The final game of the day will have Upstate taking on Ohio at 3:00 p.m. The start times are tentative due to the uncertainty with the amount of rain the Spartanburg area will receive Friday night through Sunday morning.

Upstate was scheduled to play Ohio and Albany Friday. Rain continued throughout the morning and into the early afternoon before the decision was made to cancel today's games as well as Saturday's contests with the forecast calling for a 90 percent chance of rain. Upstate was scheduled to take on Brown Saturday and then Fairfield and Winthrop Sunday. Now, the Spartans will play just two games this weekend.
