GREENVILLE, S.C. - USC Upstate allowed two goals in the first half, as they were defeated by Furman 3-0 on Monday night at Stone Soccer Stadium. The Paladins now own a 1-0-0 record on the season, while the Spartans dip to 0-2-0.

Furman scored twice in a six minute span en route to the victory. The first goal came in the 27th minute when Martha Hall scored from the left corner on an assist by Sara El-Shami. The Paladins struck again in the 33rd minute on a goal by Alexa Jones.

Upstate managed just four shots on goal in the contest, with three coming in the first half and one coming in the second. The Spartans couldn't capitalize on their opportunities, but showed improvement on offense compared to their season opener. Furman scored one more time in the contest. Meagan Zusi scored in the 63rd minute to set the final margin at 3-0.

Furman finished with 17 shots on goal, seven in the first period and 10 in the second. Furman had a total of 29 shots versus Upstate's five. The Paladins also led the match in corner kicks with seven, compared to none for the Spartans.

Senior goalkeeper Brittany Daughtry had a single game career high 14 saves in the loss, two of which she laid out for as she attempted to keep her team in the match. Her previous high came last season at High Point when she finished with 13 saves. The 14 saves by Daughtry ties a single game school record. She ties Diana Wabnitz and Samantha Spradley's individual game record.

Wabnitz had two 14 save matches (versus Carson-Newman and Armstrong Atlantic State, both came in the 2006 season), while Spradley had one 14 save contest (versus Charleston Southern in 2007).

Daughtry becomes the second Upstate keeper to record 14 saves since the Spartans made the jump to Division I play.

Upstate returns to the pitch on Friday night when they host Gardner-Webb. The match at County University Soccer Stadium is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
