The USC Upstate women's soccer team fell to the College of Charleston by a score of 4-0 on Wednesday night. With the victory the Cougars improve to 3-3-1 on the season, while the Spartans fall to 0-8-0 on the season.
Charleston got on the board in the 13th minute when Hannah Gmerek scored her second goal of the season. Gmerek was assisted by a crossing pass from teammate Sarah Schaidle.
Freshman goalkeeper Sian Jenkins got the start in goal for the Spartans. The goal scored by Gmerek was the lone goal that Jenkins would let by her in the first period as she recorded three saves.
After halftime, Upstate found itself on the defensive for most of the period. Charleston added three goals in the second half to set the final margin at 4-0.
Gmerek scored her second goal of the match in the 53rd minute, followed by Annie Pease and Christian Patton. Pease's goal came in the 70th minute, while Patton's came in the 81st minute.
Charleston record 21 shots on the night with 11 shots on goal, while Upstate recorded a total of two shots and both were directed at the goal. The Cougars also led the way in corner kicks by a 12-1 advantage. The Spartans did record more saves on the night with seven, compared to two for the Cougars.
Upstate will return to action on Monday when they begin a three-game home stand. First on the schedule is the Spartans final non-conference match of the season. Upstate will entertain Coastal Carolina at 6:00 p.m.
