Spartans Fall to Gardner-Webb, 3-1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The USC Upstate women's soccer team was up-ended by Gardner-Webb on Thursday night. After scoring first, the Spartans gave up three goals to the visiting Bulldogs. With the loss, Upstate falls to 0-4-0 on the season while Gardner-Webb owns a 1-3-0 mark.

Upstate's Ashlee Barrow scored just four minutes into the match. The goal scored by Barrow was the first for the freshman from Fishkill, N.Y. It was also the first for the Spartans this season.

Upstate would own the lead until the 28-minute mark when Bulldogs' Sarah Keyser scored her first goal of the season on a penalty kick. GWU would take a 2-1 lead when Megan Tremblay scored in the 37th minute, a lead they would own at intermission.

GWU scored its final goal of the night when Megan Reimer scored in the 86th minute. On the night, GWU record 17 shots, seven of which were shots on goal. Meanwhile, Upstate had just seven total shots, with four of those being shots on goal. The Bulldogs also owned an eight to one margin in corner kicks. Upstate goalkeeper Sian Jenkins recorded four saves on the night while Samantha Rupert recorded three saves for GWU.

"We did things tonight that showed signs of improvement, but we are just scratching the surface of what this team is capable of," head coach Kendall Reyes said. "I was proud of the effort both individually and as an entire team, I feel that if the team now knows they can compete at this level and this is a great starting point for the remainder of the season."

Upstate returns to the pitch on Sunday night when the team hosts cross town rival Wofford. The match at County University Soccer Stadium will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will be the first ever women's soccer match between the two schools. Fans can earn free admission to the game by bringing school supplies and dropping them off with the game sponsor, Children Shelter of the Upstate, at the ticket counter.
