Spartans Up-ended by Camels in Conference Action

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Saturday afternoon, the USC Upstate men's soccer squad fell to visiting Campbell, 1-0, in Atlantic Sun Conference action at County University Soccer Stadium.

The Camels (3-3-3, 1-1-0) notched the lone goal of the match in the 44th-minute when Eric Debrah scored his first goal of the campaign as his header found the back of the net.  Debrah was assisted on the goal by Mitchell Cardenas.

Upstate's lone shot attempt of the first half came in the 31st-minute off of the foot of Timo Foerster.  Foerster, a junior from Oberkirk, Germany, was denied by Campbell goalkeeper Ryan Amons.

Upstate had a opportunity to tie the score after a Campbell foul in the 54th-minute.  Foerster took the free kick for the Spartans from the left side, but his shot was blocked by a Campbell defender.  The rebound came right back to Foerster, but his second attempt sailed over the crossbar.

Campbell led the way in shots by a 14-3 margin, including a 6-1 advantage in shots on-goal.  The Camels took four corner kicks in the match, while the Spartans took two.  Upstate goalkeeper Jason McCabe (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork) recorded five saves on Saturday afternoon.  Meanwhile Campbell keeper Ryan Amons made one save.

Upstate committed 13 fouls and was whistled for five offsides, while the Camels were called for eight fouls and one offside penalty.

The Spartans will return to action on Friday, October 8th, when they travel to Fort Myers, Fla., to face the Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast at 7:00 p.m.
