Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate
women's soccer team fell on Senior Day to the ETSU Bucs, 1-0,
in overtime on Sunday afternoon at County University Soccer
Stadium.
Prior to the match, Upstate (3-13-2, 1-7-2) honored its four
departing seniors, Oleva DuRant, Catherine Nolff, Alyssa Roegner
and Leigh Ward.
"Today was a tough battle for our team and it was also
very emotional as we honored four great individuals," said
head coach Renee Lopez. "Our seniors gave everything
that had not only today but throughout the season and I am so proud
of them and wish them nothing but the best in the
future."
Upstate nearly took a 1-0 advantage in the second-minute, but
Upstate's Leigh Ward (Summerville, S.C./Fort Dorchester) had
her shot saved by ETSU keeper Megan Masch.
ETSU (8-7-2, 4-5-1) had a scoring opportunity in the
fourth-minute, but Terri Miller's shot hit the left post and
bounced away.
The two teams combined for just five shots in the first half and
headed to halftime in a scoreless draw. In the
53rd-minute, Alyssa Roegner (Shelby Township,
Mich./Eisenhower) had a clean break from the right side, but
ETSU's Masch made a charging save to keep the match
scoreless.
In the 79th-minute, the Spartans again had a shot at
taking the lead, but again Ward was denied by Masch.
After 90 minutes of play, the two teams remained scoreless and
headed for overtime. In the first overtime period, Terri
Miller put her shot from the top of the box past a diving Rachel
Collins (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) as ETSU claimed the 1-0
victory and a slot in next week's Atlantic Sun Conference
Tournament.
On Sunday, Rachel Collins made two saves while ETSU keeper Megan
Masch made three. ETSU was called for eight fouls and one
offsides penalty, while Upstate committed seven fouls and one
offsides penalty.
ETSU led the way in shots 13-5, but both teams registered three
shots on-goal. ETSU also owned the advantage in corner kicks,
6-0.
