Spartans Fall to #25 Florida Gulf Coast

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Competing in the first of two matches in the state of Florida this weekend, the USC Upstate men's soccer squad was downed by #25 Florida Gulf Coast, 2-0, on Friday night at the FGCU soccer complex.

The Eagles (7-2-2, 3-0-0 A-Sun) tacked on the first goal of the contest in the 18th-minute when Deion Jones scored off of a free kick after an Upstate foul.

The Spartans (1-6-3, 0-3-0) had a pair of chances to tie the match before halftime, but were unable to deliver the equalizer.  Timo Foerster's (Oberkirk, Germany/Hans Furler Gymnasium) had his shot blocked in the 34th-minute, while Jan Wienholt (Bocholt, Germany/Gymansium) had his header saved by FGCU keeper Adam Glick in the 40th-minute.

The Eagles increased the lead to 2-0 when Cristian Raudales scored off of a free kick in the 64th-minutes.

After falling behind 2-0, the Spartans were unable to draw closer as they failed to take any shots in the final 25 minutes of the match.

FGCU led the way in shots (15-6), shots on-goal (8-4) and corner kicks (3-2).  Upstate goalkeeper Jason McCabe (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork) made six saves in the match, while FGCU's Adam Glick tallied four.

There were a total of 37 fouls called in the match, 20 on FGCU and 17 on Upstate.  The Eagles were whistled for offsides twice and Upstate was whistled once.

Upstate will complete its two-match road swing on Sunday at Stetson at 1:00 p.m.
