Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Friday night at
County University Soccer Stadium, the USC Upstate women's
soccer team and the Stetson Hatters battled to a scoreless draw
after 110 minutes of action.
Each team earns one point for the tie on Friday and the four
points earned in conference play by the Spartans (3-10-1, 1-4-1
A-Sun) are the most since the move to Division I in 2007.
"Tonight was a great example of an all out team effort in
110 minutes of action," said head coach Renee Lopez.
"I am proud of our senior leaders, Catherine Nolff, Alyssa
Roegner and Leigh Ward. This is a great step in their careers
as it is the first time they have recorded four points in
conference play. Tonight is also a good foundation as we
prepare for Florida Gulf Coast, the top team in our
conference."
Stetson (6-7-1, 3-2-1) nearly took the lead in the
43rd-minute when Sarah Rodriguez took a shot at a wide
open net but freshman Rachel Curd (Lexington, Ky./Paul Laurence
Dunbar) was there to make the sliding save.
Upstate, in the 83rd-minute, again thwarted a scoring
chance by the Hatters, this time it was Ashlee Barrow (Fishkill,
N.Y./John Jay) protecting the goal for the Spartans.
The Hatters also had a pair of shots ricochet off of the
crossbar to help Upstate keep the match at a 0-0 draw.
Between the two overtime periods, Stetson took seven shots
compared to just one for the Spartans. In all, Stetson
outshot Upstate by a margin of 16-3 including 7-1 differential in
shots on-goal. Stetson also led the way in corner kicks
(6-3).
The Spartans tallied seven saves in the match. Five were
made by freshman goalkeeper Rachel Collins (Raleigh, N.C./Athens
Drive), with the other two being made by Curd and Barrow. It
is the second shutout of the season for Collins, with the other
coming less than two weeks ago at home against Lipscomb (W, 1-0,
Sept. 26). Stetson goalkeeper Andrea Garavaglia made one save in
110 minutes of action.
Upstate will close out the two-match homestand on Sunday with a
high noon kickoff against the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles.
