Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. – After USC Upstate cut a 14-point deficit to just four at 44-40 with 11:46 remaining, Coastal Carolina ended the game on a 27-10 run to claim the 71-50 victory inside the Carolina First Arena on Friday afternoon on day two of the Charleston Classic.
Upstate (0-4) found itself in a 12-point hole at halftime, 33-21, but quickly cut the deficit to six with a pair of three-pointers from Ricardo Glenn (Augusta, Ga./Richmond Academy) and Carter Cook (Clemmons, N.C./Calvary Baptist Day School). After the Spartans cut the Chanticleers lead to six at 33-27, Coastal Carolina pushed the lead to 14 at the 15:56 mark.
With Coastal Carolina (3-2) leading 41-27, Upstate went on a 13-3 run over a four minute stretch to cut the Chanticleer's lead to just four at 44-40. Glenn started the run with a layup in the paint, followed up by Tony Dukes' (Ellenwood, Ga./Atlanta Metropolitan) three-pointer from the wing and a pair of treys by Torrey Craig (Rock Hill, S.C./Great Falls HS).
During the run, Coastal Carolina scored just one basket and one free throw. Upstate capped the run on a pair of free throws by Mezie Uzochukwu (Greensboro, N.C./Northeast Guilford HS) with 11:46 remaining.
After the Spartans cut the deficit to four, the Chanticleers had a quick 5-0 burst to push the lead to nine. Craig hit a jumper as Upstate to cut the lead to just seven, but the Chanticleers would quickly push the lead to double digits and the Spartans couldn't get close again.
In the first period, Dukes put Upstate in front 3-2 with 18:31 remaining as he connected on his first three-point attempt of the game. It was the fourth consecutive game that Dukes scored first for the Spartans and all four times, Dukes has connected on a three-pointer.
Upstate pushed the lead to 6-2 on a three-pointer by Chalmers Rogers (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill HS) from the top of the key. Upstate led 11-6 with 14:03 and the five point margin was the largest of the game for the Spartans. Coastal Carolina's Willie Kirkland hit a three-pointer with 10:47 remaining in the first half as the Chanticleers took a 15-14 lead, a lead they never relinquished.
For the second consecutive day, Torrey Craig paced the Spartans as the freshman finished with 17 points, four rebounds and two blocks. Ricardo Glenn nearly recorded a double-double as he finished with nine points and 10 rebounds. Tony Dukes also had nine points on Friday for the Spartans.
Coastal Carolina had four individuals reach double-figures on Friday afternoon. Desmond Holloway scored 18 points, while Kierre Greenwood added 12. Chad Gray and Anthony Raffa scored 10 each.
For the game, the Chanticleers were 26-for-59 from the field (44.1%) and 4-for-16 from three (25.0%). Upstate connected on just 16 shots (53 attempts – 30.2%), with 11 of those shots coming from beyond the three-point arc (26 attempts – 42.3%).
Upstate will close out the 2010 Charleston Classic on Sunday morning as they will hit the court for an 11:30 a.m. tip against the loser of Friday night's game between East Carolina and Charlotte.
