Spartans Fall on Road at Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's soccer team fell behind early and Furman tacked on several goals late as the Paladins claimed a 5-0 victory at Stone Soccer Stadium.

Furman's Laura White scored just 28 seconds into the match to give the Paladins (1-1) the early 1-0 lead.  Upstate (0-2) held Furman scoreless the remainder of the half as Rachel Collins (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive HS) tallied six first half saves.

"There were some solid individual performances tonight," said head coach Renee Lopez.  "As we continue to grow with this young group, we are learning something new from each match.  We will take these early season experiences into our training sessions as we prepare for Georgia Southern."

Furman broke through in the second half, as Emily Cooper scored in the 66th-minute to put Furman up 2-0.

The Paladins went on to score three more goals to claim the victory.

Rachel Collins finished the match with nine saves.  The Paladins outshot the Spartans 27-4 in the match and Furman led the way in corner kicks, 10-1.

Upstate was called once for offsides and seven fouls, while Furman had eight fouls and three offsides.

The Spartans will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Georgia Southern.  Kickoff at County University Soccer Stadium is slated for 3:00 p.m.
