Spartans Stumble Against Eagles

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Competing in its first match of the 2010 season at County University Soccer Stadium, the USC Upstate women's soccer team (0-3-0) fell to visiting Georgia Southern by a score of 3-0.

The Eagles (1-1-0) tacked on its first goal of the match in the 34th-minute when Alex Murphy scored on a header from the right side of the box.  Murphy's goal set the halftime score at 1-0.

GSU scored just three minutes into the second half, as Sarah Oland scored her first goal of the season from the right side of the box.  Oland was assisted by teammate Danae Kaimuola.

In the 65th-minute, during a scrum in the box, the ball bounced off of the leg of a Spartan and into the net, giving the Eagles a 3-0 advantage, which proved to be the final tally.

For the third consecutive match, freshman Rachel Collins (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive HS) got the start in goal.  Collins (0-3) played the first 70 minutes of the match and recorded five saves to push her season total to 28, which leads the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Freshman Sarah Plantz (Cartersville, Ga./Cartersville HS) played the final 20 minutes between the pipes for the Spartans.  She recorded one save in her first game in a Spartan uniform.

GSU goalkeeper Missy Meyer played the first half and recorded one save.  Meyer picked up the win to improve to 1-1 on the season.  Katie Merson played the final 45 minutes and tallied three saves.

In the match, Upstate made six saves, compared to four for GSU.  The Eagles outshot the Spartans 15-6 and owned the advantage in corner kicks, 6-1.  GSU was called for 10 fouls and four offsides, compared to three fouls and zero offsides for the Spartans.

Upstate will return to action on Tuesday night when they entertain Gardner-Webb.  Kickoff between the Spartans and the Bulldogs at County University Soccer Stadium is slated for 7:00 p.m.
