Box Score BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – In its second
match of the 2010 Border Classic, the USC Upstate women's
soccer team fell to Chattanooga by a score of 1-0 on Sunday
afternoon at Greene-Harbison Field.
Upstate (1-6-0) and Chattanooga (2-5-0) battled to a 0-0 draw at
halftime with the Mocs owning a 10-9 advantage in shots.
"We are able to compete strongly in games now," said head coach
Renee Lopez. "I am pleased with the team's effort
today. We will use this game as a springboard for the start
of the conference season on Thursday."
Upstate keeper Rachel Collins (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) got
the start in goal and recorded four saves in the first half.
Similar to the match on Friday, the Spartans made a change in
goal. Sarah Plantz (Cartersville, Ga./Cartersville) came in
for the second half and tallied five saves.
In the 72nd-minute, Chattanooga's Becca Smith
scored the lone goal of the match on a header off of Hayley
Sloan's corner kick. Following the goal, Upstate had
two chances to tie the match. In the final 15 minutes, shots
by Danielle White (Calhoun, Ga./Calhoun) and Jessica Jackyra (Cary,
N.C./Apex HS) were saved by Chattanooga keeper Taylor Mangrum.
Chattanooga led the way in shots (25-11) and shots on-goal
(11-4). The Mocs also owned the lead in corner kicks by a 9-5
margin. Both teams were whistled for 10 fouls in the
match.
Upstate will return to the pitch on Thursday when it begins the
Atlantic Sun slate with a match at Campbell. The Spartans and
the Camels are scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. match.
