Men's Soccer Falls at Wofford, 4-1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Competing in its fifth game of 2010 and forth on the road, the USC Upstate men's soccer team dropped Friday night's match at Wofford.  The Terriers (1-3-1) claimed the 4-1 victory at Synder Field to pick up their first win of the season, while Upstate falls to 0-3-2.

In the 20th-minute, Upstate had a shot a 1-0 advantage but Timo Foerster's (Oberkirk, Germany/Hans Furler Gymnasium) pass to Hakeem King (Port of Spain, Trinidad/St. Mary's College) was just out of King's reach and went out of bounds.  Colin Francis (Toronto, Ontario/Father Leo J. Austin School) also had a shot from 25 yards out in the 20th-minute, but his shot sailed just over the cross bar.

The two teams battled for to a scoreless draw for over 40 minutes until Wofford's Andrew Eppelsheimer scored on an assist by Armin Kinigadner to take the 1-0 advantage.  Just 59 seconds later, Wofford extended the lead to 2-0 as Dennis Moore scored on a cross from Kinigadner. 

With less than a minute to play in the first half, Erkan Yildirim (Flensburg, Germany/Flensburg University) scored off of a rebound to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The second half started the same as the first, with the two teams battling to a scoreless draw.  Wofford's Alex Hutchins scored in the 80th-minute, giving the Terriers a 3-1 lead.  The Terriers set the final margin at 4-1 as Wilson Hood put his shot past Jason McCabe (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork) who was charging the loose ball in the 84th-minute.

In all, Wofford tallied 13 shots compared to seven for Upstate and the Terriers led the way in shots on-goal (7-4).  Wofford took six corner kicks in the match, with Upstate recording just one.  The Terriers were whistled for 15 fouls, while the Spartans committed seven fouls and were called for three offsides.

Upstate will return to the pitch on Wednesday, Sept. 22, when it hosts UNC Asheville in the first of four consecutive home matches.  Kick-off at County University Soccer Stadium is slated for 7:00 p.m.
