Spartans Avoid Sting, Defeat Hornets 2-0

Box Score

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Competing in the final non-conference match of the 2010 season, the USC Upstate women's soccer team defeated Alabama State 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Hornet Stadium.

Jessica Jackyra (Cary, N.C./Apex HS) got the Spartans (2-7-0, 0-1-0 A-Sun) on the board first as the freshman delivered what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 38th-minute as she scored from 25 yards out. With the loss, ASU falls to 1-7-0 on the season.

"Our team executed today and we got the result that we wanted," said head coach Renee Lopez.  "We have struggled to execute at times when on the attack.  It was good to have a good offensive attack today and that is the offensive threat we need as we head into our conference matches against Belmont and Lipscomb next weekend.  It was great to get some of our younger players into the match and they contributed today.  The team is starting to take form and that will help as we move forward into conference play."

Rachel Collins (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive HS) got the start in goal for the Spartans and picked up her first collegiate win.  Sarah Plantz (Cartersville, Ga./Cartersville HS) played the final 45 minutes and kept ASU off the board as Upstate picked up its second shutout victory of 2010.

Danielle White (Calhoun, Ga./Calhoun HS) pushed the Spartans lead to 2-0 when she scored from the edge of the box.

Upstate owned the advantage in shots, shots on-goal and corner kicks in Sunday's match.  Upstate recorded one save in the match while ASU recorded five.

Upstate will return to action on Friday when it hosts Belmont in the conference home opener.  Kick-off at County University Soccer Stadium is slated for 7:00 p.m.
