Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Competing in the
first conference game of the season at County University Soccer
Stadium, the USC Upstate women's soccer team fell 5-0 to the
visiting Belmont Bruins on Friday night.
The Spartans (2-8-0, 0-2-0) and the Bruins (2-7-0, 1-2-0)
appeared to be heading to a scoreless draw at halftime until
Belmont's Danielle Stolt scored her first goal of the season
on a double assist from Erica Carter and Lydia Wright in the
42nd-minute.
In the 53rd-minute, the Bruins increased the lead to
2-0 when Laura Harris connected on a header off of a corner
kick. The lead would be increased to 4-0 as Belmont tacked on
two goals in the 69th-minute.
Lauren Paynter found the back from the net from the left side in
the 83rd-minute to give the Bruins the 5-0
advantage.
Belmont led the match in shots (16-9), shots on-goal (9-3),
corner kicks (5-1). Upstate goal keepers Rachel Collins
(Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) and Sarah Plantz (Cartersville,
Ga./Cartersville) combined for four saves on the night, while Bruin
keeper Nicole Berner recorded three.
Upstate was whistled for eight fouls and three offsides, while
Belmont was called for three fouls and one offside penalty.
The Spartans will return to action on Sunday afternoon as they
host Lipscomb on Family Day. Kick-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
at County University Soccer Stadium.
