Spartans, Paladins Battle to Scoreless Draw

Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Playing in a constant rain for most of the first half, neither the USC Upstate men's soccer team nor Furman could find the back of the net in 110 minutes of action on Saturday night at a soaked and soggy field at County University Soccer Stadium.

Upstate (1-3-3) and Furman (4-3-1) combined for just six shots in the first half.  In the 14th-minute, Upstate's lone shot of the half came off of the foot of Maurice Beggs (Arima, Trinidad/Middle Georgia College).  Beggs attempt from the left side sailed just wide of the post.

In the 44th-minute when Furman's Mark Gabriel had his shot hit off of the side of the post and bounce away as the Spartans and Paladins remained scoreless at halftime.

In the 60th-minute Timo Foerster (Oberkirk, Germany/Hans Furler Gymnasium) took a shot from about 15 yards out, but it sailed just wide and the match remained scoreless.

Upstate had a pair of chances to score in the 77th and 78th minutes, but Foerster and John Collins (Cape Cod, Mass./Barnstable) were unable to capitalize.  Foerster's shot sailed wide, while Collins had his attempt blocked by a Furman defender.

In the first overtime, Upstate's Maurice Beggs and Chris McCoy (Houston, Texas/Tomball) had chances to lead Upstate to the win.  However, Beggs' shot went wide right in the 93rd-minute while McCoy's shot was saved by the Furman goalkeeper, Alec Kann.

Neither team tallied a shot in the second overtime period.

Furman totaled 10 shots in the match including three on target, while Upstate had six shots and one shot on goal.  Furman also led the match in corner kicks (8-1).  Furman was whistled for 13 fouls and five offsides, while Upstate was called for 20 fouls and three offsides.

Three days after leading the Spartans to their first-ever shutout victory (D-I era) on Wednesday night, Upstate keeper Jason McCabe tallied two saves in the match to help the Spartans earn the draw.  The Spartans also recorded a team save, while Furman's Alec Kann recorded one save in the match.

Saturday night's match concludes the non-conference slate for the Spartans in 2010.  Upstate will continue its four-match homestand with a pair of conference matches next week.  The Spartans will host Mercer in the conference opener on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m., before entertaining Campbell on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
