SCOUTING THE CAMPBELL CAMELS
Campbell Notes
The Camels will open up their Atlantic Sun schedule in
Spartanburg, S.C. against the Spartans on the campus of Converse
College.
Campbell returns five starters and nine total letterwinners from
the team that made a postseason appearance at the ASun Tournament
in 2009, while bringing in six newcomers.
Campbell, who is coming off a 3-0 win against NC Central (26-24,
25-11, 25-23), was led by Caitlin Bendy and Emily Werner on Tuesday
evening who combined for 26 points inside the John W. Pope Jr.
Convocation Center.
Campbell Picked Sixth
During the preseason, Campbell was selected to finish sixth in
the ASun preseason coaches poll. The Camel’s 2009 season saw
the resurgence of the volleyball program as the Camels went from
seven total wins in 2008 to 17 in 2009, the team’s most wins
in nearly a decade, matching the program’s win totals of both
2000 and 2001. Campbell also set a record for A-Sun wins, taking 10
on the year with Mullins at the helm.
Wanted: Werner
Senior outside hitter Emily Werner was named preseason
all-conference by the Atlantic Sun coaches poll.
“Making the preseason all-conference team is huge for
Emily,” said CU head coach Leigh Mullins. “She has
already fit into that role very well. She and my other four seniors
have been doing a great job leading this team. We certainly have
great senior leadership, and our newcomers are a great compliment
to this mixture. We have five seniors that have been through the
ups and downs of this program, and they have been a huge part of us
turning this team around.”
The pick is the highest for the squad since the Mullins era
began, and Werner’s selection is the first Campbell preseason
selection since 2007, when Femi Alabi earned the early
recognition.

Road Warriors
Spartan volleyball will not take the floor in the G.B. Hodge
Center this season due to renovations happening in the Arena; which
means that the 2010 season will take place “on the
road” in every contest. Matches that are considered
“home events” for Upstate will be held in Spartanburg
at various locations, listed below.

Mrs. Dodie Anderson, a 1981 graduate of USC Upstate with a
degree in interdisciplinary studies, announced on Wednesday October
14, 2009 that she would be providing the University with a $4
million gift to fund the project of renovating the Hodge
Center.
Anderson was presented the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2006 on
the 25th anniversary of her graduation from USC Upstate. She is the
former owner of Anderson Hardwood Floors in Clinton and Walterboro,
S.C. the largest privately owned hardwood floor manufacturer in the
United States. A co-owner, she recently sold her stake in the
company to pursue other business interests. She received the
University’s Founders Day Award in 1986, was inducted into
the University’s Honor Fraternity in May 2005, and is a
former member of the Carolina Piedmont Foundation Board of
Directors, which is the fundraising arm of USC Upstate.
The renovation of the Hodge Center will focus mainly on the
competition court and some auxiliary functions of the athletics
department. The gymnasium will be completely gutted with several
improvements scheduled to be made. In addition to the installation
of a new floor, the facility will also receive new seating,
lighting and state of the art scoreboards and scorer’s
tables.
Outside of the gym area, the women’s basketball and
volleyball programs will get their own locker room facilities after
sharing a locker room for the better part of two decades. The
athletic training facility will be expanded, while the performance
center will open in the site of the old gym and will house the
strength and conditioning program for the Spartan athletic
teams.
“The volleyball program is deeply grateful to Mrs.
Anderson for this most recent demonstration of her ongoing
commitment to Upstate, a gift that will significantly upgrade our
volleyball facilities,” said Jennifer Calloway, head coach of
the volleyball program and a 1994 graduate of USC Upstate.
