Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In just the second
meeting all-time between USC Upstate and Wofford, two schools
separated by just a few miles, the Terriers claimed a 1-0 victory
on Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field.
Just five minutes into the match, Upstate (0-5-0) had a pair of
golden opportunities as Maegan Garner (Charleston, S.C./Fort
Dorchester) had back-to-back shots denied by Terrier defenders.
The Spartans again had another chance to jump on the board first
in the 30th-minute, but Alyssa Roegner's (Shelby
Township, Mich./Eisenhower) shot was blocked by a Wofford
player.
"I am proud of the team, they battled hard today against a
tough Wofford team," said head coach Renee Lopez.
"However, we need to continue to focus on solving the little
mistakes which can lead to goals. We have to continue to work
as we prepare for next weekend's Border Classic. Our
players are battling and I am pleased with their effort, but we
have to continue to improve so that we are not defending for the
entire 90 minutes."
The two teams remained scoreless until Wofford's Nikki
Siebert delivered the lone goal of the match as she put her shot
from the right side of the box past Spartan goalkeeper Rachel Collins (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive).
The Spartans had a few chances late in the match to tie the
score at 1-1, but we unable to capitalize on those
opportunities.
Wofford (3-2-0) owned the advantage in shots (33-6) and shots
on-goal (12-2) in Sunday's match. The Terriers also
owned an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks. Upstate goalkeeper
Rachel Collins recorded 10 saves in the match, to increase her
season total to 47, which continues to lead the Atlantic Sun
Conference.
Wofford was called for seven fouls and six offsides penalties,
while Upstate was whistled for six fouls and zero offsides.
Upstate will return to action next weekend as it travels to
Boiling Springs, N.C. for the Border Classic hosted by
Gardner-Webb. The Spartans will face off with Morehead State
on Friday at 5:00 p.m., before match with Chattanooga on Sunday at
1:00 p.m.
