Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For just the third
time in the 21-game series, the USC Upstate men's soccer team
battled to a draw with Presbyterian College. On Tuesday
night, each team found the back of the net just once for the 1-1
tie at County University Soccer Stadium.
Upstate (0-1-2) struck first in the match, when Hakeem King
(Port of Spain, Trinidad/St. Mary's College) notched his
second goal of the season in the 30th-minute.
King, who was assisted on the goal by Timo Foerster (Oberkirk,
Germany/Hans Furler Gymnasium), put his shot from the left side of
the box past PC keeper William Redmond.
The Spartans nearly push the lead to 2-0 in the
40th-minute, but Matt Begley's (Summerville,
S.C./Summerville) header hit the cross-bar and bounced over the
goal.
Upstate held the 1-0 advantage at halftime and remained in the
lead until the 80th-minute when Blue Hose midfielder
Stephen Glover scored on a header from the left side. Glover
was assisted on the goal by forward Paul Gunning.
Upstate and PC (1-0-1) remained tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes of
play and headed to overtime. In the first overtime period,
the each team managed just one shot, both of which sailed over the
top of the goal.
In the second overtime, Upstate nearly claimed its first victory
of the season, but Erkan Yildirim's (Flensburg,
Germany/Flensburg University) had his shot from the left side of
the box hit off the post and ricochet away.
In the match, Upstate keeper Jason McCabe (Irmo, S.C./Dutch
Fork) recorded six saves, while PC keeper William Redmond tallied
10. The Blue Hose led the way in shots (23-19), but the
Spartans on the advantage in shots on-goal (11-7). PC led the
way in corner kicks by a count of 8-4.
PC was called for 17 fouls and zero offsides, while the Spartans
were whistled for 10 fouls and 3 offside penalties.
It will be more than a week before Upstate makes its return to
the pitch. The Spartans will travel to Boiling Springs, N.C.,
on Wed., Sept. 15 for a 7:00 p.m. match against the Gardner-Webb
Bulldogs.
