Lewis, Childers Lead Upstate Over Portland State

Seattle, Wash. – Janna Lewis delivered a two-run double in the fifth inning and Morgan Childers went the distance to pick up her second win of the tournament as USC Upstate claimed a 2-1 victory over Portland State in the Husky Classic Saturday afternoon.

Upstate improved to 26-1 on the year and will take on No. 5 Washington Saturday evening around 5:30. Saturday's tournament schedule was altered due to heavy rain. Upstate was supposed to have played Oregon State, but with the Beavers' first game cancelled and the game against Upstate delayed, Oregon State departed the tournament. The schedule was altered to pit the Spartans against Portland State.

In a heavy, steady rain, Upstate fell behind early in the game when Carly McEachran hit a solo home run in the second inning. It was one of four hits the Vikings would collect on the day off of Childers (Kings Mountain, N.C.).

Upstate threatened in the third inning when Katelyn Molkenthin (Valrico, Fla.) led off the inning with a double. She moved to third with one out on Kim Brasil's (Mississauga, Ontario) single. However, Brasil was thrown out trying to steal second and the inning ended with a force out at second.

Upstate finally broke through with two runs in the fifth inning. Molkenthin reached on an error by the second baseman. Brasil followed with a two-out single to put runners on first and second. Lewis (Huntersville, N.C.) then delivered with a two-run double to score Molkenthin and Brasil to give Upstate a 2-1 lead.

Childers retired the side in order in the sixth inning and limited Portland State in the seventh to earn the win. She improved to 19-0 on the year. She allowed one run on four hits with 10 strikeouts. Anna Bertrand went the distance for Portland State. She took the loss to fall to 5-4, allowing two unearned runs on five hits with eight strikeouts.

Brasil and Lewis led the Spartans at the plate with two hits apiece. Molkenthin had the other hit for the Spartans.
