Spartanburg, S.C. – Molly Brossart connected on a three-run home run to lift South Carolina to a come from behind 4-3 victory over USC Upstate in non-conference softball action Wednesday evening at Cyrill Stadium.
Upstate fell to 34-10 on the year and will hit the road this weekend to take on Kennesaw State and Mercer in a pair of key A-Sun doubleheaders Friday and Saturday. South Carolina improved to 21-20 on the year and will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend for a three-game series against Arkansas.
"It was a typical game with South Carolina," said Upstate head coach Chris Hawkins. "They are a good team and we know it is going to be a battle every time we play them. I thought we played well, they just got the key hit when they needed it. We will turn our attention to this weekend and focus on playing two difficult opponents in Kennesaw State and Mercer."
The game was a pitcher's duel for the first three innings as neither team could push a run across the plate. That changed in the fourth inning when Upstate plated a pair of runs on Jenna Torbert's RBI double.
South Carolina, though, continued to battle and cut the deficit to one with a run in the fifth inning when Dana Hathorn scored on a wild pitch. The Gamecocks went on top for good on Brossart's three-run homer in the sixth.
Upstate rallied for a run in the bottom of the sixth when Katie Zauner (Canby, Ore.) scored from second on Cheyanna Ohlrich's (North Bend, Ore.) double.
Upstate had one last opportunity to tie the game in the seventh inning, but couldn't put a run on the board and South Carolina took the 4-3 victory.
Audrey Broyles went the distance, allowing three runs on three hits with three strikeouts to improve to 5-6 on the year. Upstate starter Morgan Childers (Kings Mountain, N.C.) went the distance for Upstate. She allowed four runs, three earned, with seven strikeouts. She reached 300 strikeouts on the year for the second time in her career. She fell to 24-6 on the year.
