Sanders Earns All-Tournament Nods After Upstate Drops Two at Marriott Cavalier Classic

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The USC Upstate volleyball team (1-2) dropped a pair of matches today (Aug. 27) against Virginia (25-12, 25-23, 25-21) and Western Michigan (25-11, 25-11, 25-16) at UVA's Marriott Cavalier Classic, while junior Emily Sanders was named to the all-tournament team.

Over the weekend, Sanders tallied 76 assists to average 8.44 per set. She recorded 28 digs, averaging 3.11 per set to go along with five kills. The junior also posted a .938 serve percentage during the tournament.

Senior Morgan Thomas and junior Mindy Quimby led the Spartans offensively against Virginia with nine kills each. Quimby added six digs, while Thomas recorded two digs and three total blocks. Freshman Kayla McAvoy contributed three kills, three digs and two total rejections.

Defensively, sophomore Morgan Page posted a team-high 10 digs, while Sanders registered seven digs, 22 assists and two kills. Senior Kelsie Queen and junior Shari Hewson had six digs each, while Queen also collected five kills.

Simone Asque led the Cavaliers with 15 kills, eight digs and two total blocks, while serving four aces. Beth Wildermuth tallied 31 assists for Virginia to go along with five digs, while Rachel Clark and Tori Janowski led the team in digs with 15 and 12, respectively. Janowski also had eight kills.

Against Western Michigan, Page collected 12 digs and Sanders added seven digs and 17 assists. Queen and Quimby each had five kills, while Thomas tallied four. Queen posted six digs and Quimby had five.

The Broncos were led by Ali Gossen, who registered a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs. Carlee Berland also had 13 kills, while Jessica Brown posted 12 for Western Michigan. Also for the Broncos, Terin Norris totaled 41 assists, while Lena Oliver recorded 21 digs.

The Spartans are back in action Sept. 2-3, traveling to the Radford Tournament. Upstate takes on tournament host Radford Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. Follow the Spartans this season on Facebook and Twitter.
