Spartans Let Early Lead Slip Away at Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The USC Upstate baseball team held a 6-0 advantage after its first two at-bats, but Furman was able to rally for a 10-7 win Wednesday night at Latham Stadium.

With Upstate (12-3) leading 1-0, Trey Richardson (Lakeland, Fla.) connected on a three-run homer to left to give the Spartans a 4-0 lead heading to the bottom of the first.

After Furman (10-8) went scoreless in the home half of the inning, the Spartans went back on the attack in the top of the second.  Brody Greer (Honea Path, S.C.) was able to score on an error by shortstop Hunter Burton, while Jordan Stampler (Davie, Fla.) scored on a Luke Weber (Spartanburg, S.C.) RBI single up the middle.

Furman was able to score its first runs of the contest on a Chris Ohmstede three-run homerun to center.  Gaither Bumgardner (Fort Lawn, S.C.) made a leaping attempt at the ball, but the ball fell out of his glove and over the outfield wall.

The Paladins were able to close the gap to two when Will Miller delivered a RBI single in the fourth.   Zack Greenwell scored on Miller's single as Furman trailed 6-4 after four complete.

The Spartans final run of the night came in the fifth when Greer singled through the left side allowing Greg Guers (Langhorne, Pa.) to score.

Upstate was unable to hold onto the 7-4 advantage as the Paladins scored six runs over the course of their final four at-bats to claim the 10-7 victory.

Weber and Greer led the Spartans with two hits each while Richardson paced the team with three RBI.  Chris Ohmstede led Furman with three hits and four RBI.

Chris Knauff (Marietta, Ga.) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on four hits during two innings of relief work.  Meanwhile, Jacques de Gruy earned the win with Elliott Warford earning the save.

The Spartans will return to action Friday when they begin conference play with a three-game series against Lipscomb.
