SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's soccer team allowed a goal in each half Sunday afternoon to give the Stetson University Hatters a 2-0 victory at County University Stadium in Atlantic Sun action.
The Spartans fall to 2-9 overall and 0-2 in Atlantic Sun play with the loss, while the Hatters rebound from a Friday loss at ETSU and improve to 3-7 overall and 1-1 in league action.
A slow start saw neither team register a shot in the opening 15 minutes, but when the Hatters finally got one off at the 15:01 mark they made it count. Rebecca Oser settled a clear from the Upstate defense and drilled a shot from 30 yards out in the top right corner of the goal to give Stetson an early 1-0 lead. The score for Oser was her first goal of the season.
Upstate's first shot of the came in the 27th minute when Tamaya Tompoe took a deflection off a corner and attempted back-to-back shots that were blocked by the Hatter defense.
Stetson registered five shots in the opening period, while the Spartans attempted four shots that were all off the mark.
Stetson added some insurance in the 77th minute off another goal for the highlight reels when Mara Keomanivane lined up from 25 yards out and drilled a strike past a diving Sarah Plantz to double the Hatters' lead and make it 2-0.
Upstate attempted two shots over the final 15 minutes of action, but Michelle Calmeyn's strike in the 80th minute was high of the mark and Katrina Sovoy's shot in the 87th minute was wide right as Stetson held on to pick up the 2-0 victory on the road.
Plantz allowed both Stetson goals and picked up eight saves in goal for the Spartans, while Victoria Troccoli tallied her third win of the year between the posts, stopping both Upstate shots on target.
The Spartans return to action next weekend when they hit the road for two more A-sun match-ups against Mercer University and Kennesaw State. Upstate will take on the Bears Friday at 7 p.m. in Macon, Ga., before a 1 p.m. kickoff against the Owls Sunday afternoon.
