Spartanburg, S.C. – Katrina Frost scored a pair of goals and Kennesaw State used a third goal late in the second half to pull away en route to a 3-1 victory over USC Upstate Friday night from County University Soccer Stadium.
Kennesaw State (6-5-0, 3-0-0) scored the game's first goal in the 32nd minute when Frost netted her third goal of the season, capitalizing off a corner kick from Jewelia Strickland. Strickland began the scoring opportunity by playing a short pass to her left to a waiting Brittney Reed, who followed with a service into Spartan box. Caldner leapt high into the hair and fired a header by a diving Sarah Plantz to put the Owls ahead 1-0.
Frost added a second goal minutes into the second half when she scored on a shot from nearly 30 yards. She controlled the ball with her back towards the Upstate net, turned around to take one dribble to the left and fire a shot that just made it over the outstretched hands of Plantz and into the back of the net.
The Owls used a goal from Monica Herrera to stretch its lead to 3-0 with just over 10 minutes left to play. Iyani Hughes picked up an assist on the play as her pass left to the feet of Herrera set up the strike into the corner of the Spartan goal.
Upstate (3-6-2, 0-2-0) cut the Kennesaw State lead to 3-1 in the 89th minute following Mollie Water's first career goal. Kenzie Major delivered a swift through ball that found its way past the Kennesaw State defense and hit a streaking Waters in stride for a shot past Owl keeper Olivia Sturdivant and into the left corner of the goal.
All-A-Sun keeper Sarah Plantz recorded eight saves and upped her league-best total to 52.
Upstate returns to the pitch Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. when the Spartans welcome Mercer to County University Soccer Stadium.
