Kent, Ohio – Four Spartans scored in double figures and USC Upstate used a balanced attack to defeat Western Carolina 72-58 Saturday afternoon in the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament from the M.A.C. Center on the Kent State campus.
The Spartans finished competition in the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament with a 2-1 record after beating Niagara on Thursday before falling to tournament host Kent State on Friday.
Ricardo Glenn scored a season-high 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting to go along with eight rebounds and two assists. Fred Miller scored a career-high 13 points and added a pair of assists, while Jodd Maxey poured in 11 points and seven rebounds. Ty Greene finished with 10 points and five assists to help Upstate finish with 18 assists, marking the third straight game the Spartans have tallied at least 15 assists.
Trey Sumler finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists, while Brandon Boggs also recorded 16 points for Western Carolina.
USC Upstate led by double digits for the majority of the second half before Western Carolina cut the Spartan lead to eight points with just under two minutes remaining. Upstate responded by scoring the next eight points to push its lead up to 16 with 36 seconds remaining.
Ricardo Glenn was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and USC Upstate shot 57.7 percent as a team on its way to a 43-26 lead at halftime. Glenn finished the half with 13 points to help Upstate hold a 20-8 edge in points in the paint.
Kenneth Hall gave Western Carolina its largest lead of the half when his jumper put the Catamounts ahead 8-4 just under four minutes into the game. USC Upstate answered with 16-4 run over the next 4:47 to open up a 20-12 lead. The Catamounts would get no closer than eight points the rest of the game.
Mike Brown's three-pointers at the 5:49 mark pulled Western Carolina to within nine points, but Upstate used a 12-1 run over the next 3:27 to take its biggest lead of the half at 43-23 on a three-pointer from Mario Blessing.
Upstate held Western Carolina to just 29.0 percent from the field on 9-for-31 shooting and held leading scorer Trey Sumler to just three points on 1-of-8 shooting. Sumler scored a career-high 35 points Saturday against Niagara.
USC Upstate returns to action Monday at 7 p.m. when the Spartans host Bob Jones University in the team's home opener from the Hodge Center.
