Boiling Springs, N.C. – USC Upstate freshman midfielder Rachel Baylor (Greensboro, N.C.) netted her first career goal to lift the Spartans to a 1-0 victory over Gardner-Webb in the final game of the Under Armour Border Classic from Greene-Harbison Field.

Baylor netted the game-winner with a header in the 82 minute that was set up following a corner kick from senior midfielder Rebecca Sanzsole (Kitchener, Ontario). Sanzsole sent a service into the Gardner-Webb box that found its way to the turf and was never cleared by the Bulldog defense. Baylor managed to gain possession of the loose ball and head a strike into the back of the net to give the Spartans their first victory since Aug. 23. It was Baylor's only shot of the game.

USC Upstate (2-4-2) maintained possession for the majority of the first half and finished the first 45 minutes with a 10-5 shot advantage. Sophomore Kenzie Major (Rome Ga.) paced the Spartans with four shots in the opening period and provided Upstate with some of its best scoring opportunities.

In the second half, Gardner-Webb managed to control possession and tempo on its way to holding a 13-5 edge in shots. The Bulldogs had the final scoring opportunity of the game when they were awarded a corner kick with less than a minutes remaining, but Justine Ibarra's header sailed wide and out of harm's way.

Upstate senior keeper Sarah Plantz (Cartersville, Ga.) tallied five of her six saves in the second stanza to preserve the victory and record her third shutout of the season. Plantz, the reigning A-Sun Goalkeeper of the Year, hasn't allowed a goal in her last 279:59 minutes of action.

Upstate returns to action Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Charleston, S.C., to battle Charleston Southern in what will be the sixth match this season pitting Upstate against Big South competition.
