Spartanburg, S.C. – Ricardo Glenn and Torrey Craig each recorded double-doubles and USC Upstate picked up its first conference win of the season with a 73-64 victory over Northern Kentucky Thursday night from the Hodge Center.
Glenn finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds to help Upstate outrebound Northern Kentucky 38-25 and hold a 41-22 edge in points in the paint. Craig tallied 11 points, a season-high 12 rebounds and five assists for his first double-double of the season and the 21st of his career. Ty Greene and Fred Miller each had 13 points, while Jodd Maxey added 11 points.
Tyler White led Northern Kentucky with 17 points to go along with three assists. Jordan Jackson finished with 15 points, five rebounds and three steals for the Norse.
In a game that featured eight lead changes and 11 ties, USC Upstate took its largest lead of the first half midway through the period on a layup from Michael Buchanan to put the Spartans ahead 22-16. Northern Kentucky answered with a 15-6 run over the next 2:51 to take a 34-28 lead capped by a jumper from Jalen Billups.
The Spartans closed the first half on a 7-1 run over the final 1:39 to pull even at 35 points apiece at halftime.
The two teams went back-and-forth over the first 3:41 of the second half before Miller scored five straight points for the Spartans with a three-pointer from the wing and a dunk off a steal from Greene to put Upstate ahead 46-41.
The Spartans continued to build their lead and back-to-back baskets from Glenn later in the half gave Upstate a 56-46 lead with just under seven minutes remaining. Northern Kentucky managed to chip away at the lead and pull within four points, 60-56, at the 3:38 mark on a three-pointer by Tyler White.
Miller responded with a layup and a three-pointer sandwiched in between a free throw by Jackson to push the Upstate lead back up to eight points with just under two minutes to play. After a missed three-pointer from Deontae Cole, Upstate made enough free throws over the final 1:25 to secure the victory and improve to 4-1 at home this season.
Upstate returns to the floor Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. when the Spartans welcome Lipscomb to the Hodge Center.
