Jacksonville, Fla. – Julia Burton converted a penalty kick in the 98th minute to propel Jacksonville to a 2-1 victory over the USC Upstate women's soccer team Sunday afternoon from Southern Oak Stadium.
Following a foul by the Upstate defense inside its own box, Burton netted the golden goal to register her second goal of the season and snap a two-game losing streak in the process.
Jacksonville jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when Jessica Cataldo-Ramirez picked up her first goal of the season. Cataldo-Ramirez fired a shot from nearly 25 yards out that just snuck over the hands of a leaping Ellen Bright.
Spartan forward Haley Gethin netted the equalizer late in the second half to register her first goal of the season and pull Upstate even in the 73rd minute. Gethin capitalized on a failed clearing attempt by the Jacksonville defense by securing the loose ball and sending a shot pass Dolphin keeper Sarah Sierra.
Upstate put together one last scoring opportunity to win the game in regulation, but Kenzie Major's shot in the 82nd minute was stopped by Sierra. Major finished the game with a team-high five shots.
Bright tallied a career-high 12 saves to surpass her previous best of nine she recorded against Presbyterian during the 2012 season.
Upstate returns to action Friday at 6 p.m. when the Spartans welcome to Lipscomb to County University Soccer Stadium for Senior Night.
