Spartanburg, S.C. – Kenzie Major scored two goals and Brooke Bailey made four saves to lead USC Upstate to a 2-1 victory over Francis Marion Tuesday evening in non-conference action from Country University Soccer Stadium.
Major upped her goals total to seven and passed former Spartan great Michelle Calmeyn for the all-time single season record at Upstate during the Division I era. The Rome, Ga., native also holds the school record for the most career points in the Division I era with 21.
"It's nice to be recognized with some of the great players that have passed through here over the years," Major said. "But tonight was all about getting a win for this team and our seniors in their final home game of the year. I've played with these girls for a long time, so it was nice to be able to contribute in seeing them walk away with a win."
Francis Marion scored the first goal of the game when Elizabeth Asare netted her fifth goal of the season, capitalizing on a loose ball shot inside the Spartan box in the 15th minute.
Major answered minutes later with her sixth goal of the season to pull Upstate into a 1-1 tie in the 20th minute. Freshman Nicki Krejci picked up her team-leading fourth assist of the night when her through ball hit Major in stride for a shot past Patriot keeper Taylor O'Berry.
Major put the Spartans up for good in the 32nd minute when she netted her seventh goal of the year for her second multi-goal game of the season. Casey Troiano started the scoring opportunity and picked up an assist in the process as her pass to Major was blasted into the back of the Patriot net.
Francis Marion had an opportunity to score the equalizer midway through the second half in the 58th minute as the Patriots were awarded a penalty kick after a foul inside the Spartan box. Chanel Harris was called upon the take the kick, but her shot was denied when Bailey leaped to her left and swatted the ball back into play to preserve the lead.
"I am so proud of the way our team played tonight," USC Upstate head coach Abby Minihan said. "This is a great win for our seniors, and I am so happy they were able to experience at least one more victory before the season comes to an end."
Upstate finished the game with a season-high 21 shots and 10 corner kicks.
Upstate closes the regular season Friday at 7 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Kennesaw, Ga., to take on Kennesaw State from Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
