Kennesaw, Ga. – Olivia Sturdivant registered her second shutout of the season to help Kennesaw State snap a two-game losing streak en route to a 1-0 victory over the USC Upstate women's soccer team Friday evening from Fifth Third Bank Stadium in the final game of the regular season.
Upstate used five saves in the first half from keeper Ellen Bright to reach halftime in a scoreless tie with Kennesaw State. The Spartans did hold a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks in the opening half, but Kennesaw State tallied seven shots and limited Upstate to one.
The Owls struck for the only goal of the game midway through the second half when Alma Gardarsdottir scored her first goal of the season with a shot past Bright in the 64th minute. Forward Maggie Gaughan delivered a through ball to a streaking Gardarsdottir for a shot into the left corner of the goal.
"We played extremely well despite not finishing with the result we wanted," USC Upstate head coach Abby Minihan said. "Even though a win wouldn't have qualified us for the conference tournament, I thought that we never quit and played for each other the entire game. I am so proud of these girls."
Spartan junior Kenzie Major had a team-high two shots and ended the season with seven goals to become the all-time single season leader at Upstate during the Division I era. Freshman Nicki Krejci finished the year with a team-high four assists and stands as the Upstate all-time single season leader in the Division I era.
