Upstate Baseball Falls at Charleston Southern

Charleston, S.C. – Will Hartsell went 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Charleston Southern to a 7-1 victory over USC Upstate Tuesday evening from the CSU Ballpark.

Charleston Southern (13-5) scored the game's first run in the bottom of the second on an RBI double down the left field line from Hartsell. Upstate answered with a run in the top of the third to tie the score 1-1. Tyler Lesch drew a walk to lead off the inning and took third when Brian Thompson followed with a single through the right side. Two batters later, Spartan catcher Luke Weber picked up his ninth RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly to plate Lesch.

Back-to-back doubles from Chase Shelton and Nick Berry to lead off the bottom of the fourth gave the Buccaneers a 2-1 lead. Hartsell struck again in the sixth inning with a two-run single to give Charleston Southern a 4-1 edge.

The Buccaneers tacked on another run in the seventh inning on a two-out, RBI single from Berry. Charleston Southern used an RBI double from Alex Tomassovich and an RBI single from Austin Hicks in the bottom of the eighth inning to account for its final two runs of the game.

Joe Pistacchio (1-0) picked up his first win of the season after scattering two hits over three innings in relief of starter Andrew Locklear.

Eric Birklund (0-3) went five innings and allowed two runs on three hits and suffered the loss.

Both Lesch and Thompson had two hits to lead the Upstate offensive attack.

Upstate returns to action Wednesday at 4 p.m. when the Spartans travel across town to face The Citadel from Riley Park.
