Strong Pitching Pushes Florida Gulf Coast Past Upstate

Spartanburg, S.C. – Florida Gulf Coast used two dominant pitching performances to earn a doubleheader sweep over USC Upstate following a 4-0 victory in game one and a 17-5 win in game two Saturday from Harley Park.

Game one starter Nick Deckert went seven strong innings, scattering seven hits and striking out five on his way to picking up his fourth win of the season. Garrett Anderson pitched the final two frames and allowed just one hit.

Upstate starter David Roseboom (1-4) took the loss despite throwing his best game of the season. Roseboom struck out a career-high 10 batters and allowed just one run on five hits in seven innings of work.

Florida Gulf Coast (16-8, 3-0) broke the scoreless tie in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single from shortstop Alex Diaz. Left fielder Colton Bottomley opened the inning with a single to center field, but was replaced by pinch runner Adam Eggnatz. Andrew Valencia moved Eggnatz up one base with a sacrifice bunt before Diaz followed with a single into right-center field.

The Eagles added three insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning, using a three-run home run from third baseman Zack Tillery to open up a 4-0 edge.

Tyler Lesch, Luke Weber and Stephen Dowling all had two hits for the Spartans.

In game two, Jack English gave up two runs (none earned) on two hits in seven innings en route to picking up his first victory of the season. Upstate starter Dylan Parker (0-2) took the loss after going the first 2.1 innings.

Bottomley led the Eagles in the second game, going 4-for-6 with two RBIs to lead an offensive attack that pounded out 20 hits. Diaz finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while both Jake Noll and Michael Suchy each had three hits and one RBI.

Upstate first baseman Zach Krider finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs to up his season total to a team-leading 21.

Upstate returns to action Tuesday at 6 p.m. when the Spartans continue a seven-game homestand by hosting UNC Asheville from Harley Park.
