Asheville, N.C. – Corey Randall scattered five hits and allowed two runs in leading UNC Asheville to a 9-4 victory over USC Upstate Monday night from Greenwood Baseball Field.
Randall struck out five and walked one in seven innings on the mound en route to his second win of the season. Brian Connolly and Elliot Criss each pitched an inning in relief of Randall.
UNC Asheville used a leadoff walk and four straight singles to ignite a five-run first inning in support of Randall. Hunter Bryant, Tanner Bush and Derek Smith all picked up RBIs during the inning.
Upstate answered with a run in the top of the second on an RBI groundout from centerfielder Sam Kysor. Stephen Dowling reached on a fielding error to open the inning and took second when AJ Mackey followed with a sharp single through the left side. After a sacrifice bunt from Jordan Miller moved both runners up one base, Kysor slapped a grounder to the left side to plate Dowling with his fifth RBI of the season.
The Spartans tacked on another run in the fourth inning when Dowling scored from second on a wild pitch. Dowling opened the inning with a single through the right side and took second on a sac bunt from Mackey.
Eli Miller put the Bulldogs ahead 6-2 with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to score Phillip Treadway from third. Tommy Houmard and Treadway delivered RBI singles in the sixth inning to help give UNC Asheville an 8-2 edge.
Luke Weber laced a double down the left field line in the eighth inning to score Brian Thompson and pull Upstate within 8-3. It was the 52nd career double for Weber, leaving him just two shy of becoming Upstate's all-time leader. Mackey followed with a single into left field to plate Weber with the fourth Upstate run. Mackey finished 3-for-3 with one RBI and one stolen base to lead the Upstate offensive attack.
UNC Asheville added a run in the eighth on a bases loaded walk.
Spartan starter David Roseboom (2-6) suffered the loss after allowing eight runs (six earned) on 12 hits in six innings of work. Zach Krider and Brian Boocock both saw action in relief of Roseboom.
Upstate continues a seven-game road trip Tuesday at 6 p.m. when the Spartans head across town to face Wofford from King Field.
