Spartanburg, S.C. – Trailing by four entering the ninth inning, Jacksonville rallied for six runs and then held on for a 9-7 victory over USC Upstate Saturday evening in game two of a three-game series from Harley Park.
Jacksonville put runners on first and second with one out after a fielder's choice and a hit by pitch. Michael Babb followed with a single to right field to drive in Alex Seifert with the first run of the ninth inning. Left fielder Dylan Dillard then reached on an RBI infield single to third base to pull the Dolphins within 7-5. After a fielder's choice by Connor Marabell erased Dillard from the base baths with a force out at second, Scott Shaub singled through the right side to leave Jacksonville trailing by just one run.
The Dolphins took the lead in the next at-bat when a line drive to the outfield off the bat of Braddock Rowe was misplayed, allowing both runners to score and Braddock to reach second base. Cameron Gibson capped the scoring with a single up the middle to drive in Braddock.
Ryan Quintero earned the win in relief after pitching a perfect eighth inning. Adam Maxon retired the Spartans in order in the ninth inning en route to his seventh save of the season.
Erik Samples took the loss for Upstate after allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits in 0.2 innings of work. Spartan starter David Roseboom turned in another strong outing, finishing with five strikeouts and just two runs allowed in 6.2 innings of work in his final appearance at Harley Park.
Upstate scored runs in each of the first four innings and built a 5-0 lead after four complete. Luke Weber put the Spartans ahead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored Daniel Seeba. Upstate added another run in the second inning when Jordan Miller scored from third on a fielding error on Rowe at third.
The Spartans used an RBI double from Zach Krider and an RBI single from Miller in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Samples added a sac fly in the fourth inning to account for Upstate's fifth run of the game.
Jacksonville cut into the lead with two runs in the sixth on a sac fly from Dillard and an RBI single from Schaub. Upstate, however, answered with two runs in the home half, using Stephen Dowling's first career home run and an RBI single from Samples to regain its five-run cushion.
Seeba finished with a career-high four hits to go along with three runs scored, while Miller and Samples each registered two hits apiece.
Upstate and Jacksonville put the finishing touches on a three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. Prior to first pitch, Upstate will honor its six seniors with a ceremony recognizing their accomplishments and achievements.
