Johnson City, Tenn. – Andrew Lasure's pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted ETSU to a 3-2 victory over USC Upstate Saturday afternoon in game two of a three-game series from Thomas Stadium.
Buccaneer left fielder Jordan Sanford was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from second baseman Trey York. Lasure followed by hitting the second pitch he saw deep into centerfield to allow Sanford to race home with the game-winning run.
Clinton Freeman (2-4) earned the win in relief after allowing just one hit over the final two innings.
Upstate reliever Erik Samples suffered the loss and fell to 5-2. Starting pitcher David Roseboom allowed just two runs on five hits in eight strong innings. Roseboom also struck out five hitters and became just the fourth pitcher in school history with 200 career punchouts. In addition, the Pattersonville, N.Y., native moved into third place on Upstate's all-time strikeout list with 203.
Luke Weber put Upstate ahead 1-0 and collected his 18th RBI in the process with a groundout in the top of the first inning. Tyler Lesch led off the game with a sharp single through the right side and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Daniel Seeba. After Samples singled through the left side to put runners on the corners, Weber reached on a fielder's choice to shortstop to plate Lesch from third.
ETSU pushed across two runs in the fifth inning on an RBI single Jeremy Taylor and a bases loaded walk to Chris Riopedre to go ahead 2-1.
Upstate answered with a run in the top of the sixth on an RBI double from Lesch. Shortstop Dylan Woods drew a two-out walk and scored all the way from first to tie the game at 2-2 on Lesch's third hit of the game.
Lesch and Samples both finished with three hits apiece to lead the Upstate offensive attack, while Weber picked up a double in the ninth inning to move into a tie for the most doubles all-time at Upstate with 53.
Upstate and ETSU put the finishing touches on a three-game series Sunday at 1:05 p.m. from Thomas Stadium.
