Charleston, S.C. – Lea Raedle's goal in the 63rd minute lifted The Citadel to a 1-0 victory over the USC Upstate women's soccer team Friday afternoon from Washington Light Infantry Field in the opening game of the regular season.
The scoring opportunity started when Mady Riegel fired a shot on goal that was saved and deflected back into the field of play by Upstate keeper Ellen Bright. Raedle raced to the loose ball and knocked in the rebound for the game-winner.
Following Raedle's goal, The Citadel defense stiffened and limited the Spartans to just four shots over the final 26 minutes. Naomi Carter collected four saves and notched the win for the Bulldogs, while Bright finished with five saves.
Upstate junior midfielder Kenzie Major paced the Spartans with three total shots and one on goal, while Haley Gethin, Casey Troiano and Mary Stanton also registered one shot on goal. Overall, Upstate held a 10-8 advantage in shots and an 8-5 edge in corner kicks.
