Spartanburg, S.C. – UNC Asheville scored just over seven minutes into the game and made it hold up en route to a 1-0 victory over the USC Upstate women's soccer team Sunday afternoon from County University Stadium.
Amanda Dailor scored the lone goal of the match when she struck a loose ball inside the Upstate box that just snuck over the line before Spartan keeper Ellen Bright could corral it. Kaitlyn Eckert started the scoring chance by delivering a corner kick inside the Spartan box that deflected off an Upstate defender to the waiting feet of Dailor.
"We knew that they were probably going to send two to the ball, and I think that we just got a little confused because we hadn't had to do that much this year and it was early in the game," Bright said. "I called away but it swung back in, so I should have gotten it, but you have to give credit to them for finishing."
Upstate junior Kenzie Major nearly netted the equalizer with less than nine minutes remaining in the first half when she broke through for a one-on-one situation with Asheville keeper Heather Muller. Major started her run about 30 yards outside the Bulldog goal and received a through ball in stride from senior Mary Stanton. Muller, however, left her line during Major's and came out for a saving slide just as Major struck the ball with her right foot.
The Spartans put together another quality scoring opportunity late in the second half when Haley Gethin came just inches from bending a shot past Muller. With Upstate on the attack, Gethin gained possession of the ball just outside the UNC Asheville box, took a few dribbles to her left and fired a left-footed shot over the Bulldog defense that curled just wide of the far post.
Muller finished with five saves to earn her second win of the season, while Bright tallied three saves.
"I'm very disappointed with the outcome of the game because I thought we put together a much better performance today than we did Friday against The Citadel," Upstate head coach Abby Minihan said. "I really feel like we deserved to win. The girls played amazing, but we still have a few things to work on. It's early in the season and we certainly have ways in which we can improve, but we are definitely becoming something."
Upstate returns to action Friday at 8 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Montgomery, Ala., to take on Alabama State.
