Spartanburg, S.C. – Sydney David netted the game-winning goal in the 105th minute to break a scoreless tie and lift Gardner-Webb to a 1-0 victory over USC Upstate Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Border Classic Tournament from County University Stadium.

David received a pass inside the Upstate box from Justine Ibarra and fired a shot across the goal that beat Spartan keeper Ellen Bright to the far post for her first goal of the season.

"This was a disappointing loss because of how well we played defensively for the majority of the game," USC Upstate head coach Abby Minihan said. "We are definitely improving each game, but we still have certain phases of our game that need to become more consistent if we want to reach our goals."

Bright finished the game with eight saves, which included a diving stop in the 68th minute on a shot from Shelby Hooe that looked as if it was headed into the back of the Upstate net.

"Ellen made some really great saves for us today, but we just weren't able to find a way to score a goal and capitalize on our chances," Minihan added.

Freshman Nicki Krejci led Upstate with two shots, while Caroline Keener, Shauna Kain and Courtney Reilly each registered one shot apiece.

Upstate returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Johnson City, Tenn., to face former Atlantic Sun foe ETSU from Summers-Taylor Stadium.
