Lexington, Va. – Kenzie Major registered her fifth goal of the season and USC Upstate won its second road match of the season Sunday afternoon in a 1-0 victory over VMI from Patchin Field.

Upstate's scoring opportunity unfolded in the 25th minute following a through ball from Samantha Seelinger that found the feet of a streaking Major inside the Keydet box. Major maintained control of the ball and fired a shot that beat VMI keeper Kirsten Hancock for the game's only goal.

Major tallied a total of six shots and moved into first place all-time at USC Upstate during the Division I era with 83 shots. The Rome Ga., native also upped her career points total to 16 points and stands tied with Michelle Calmeyn for the most in school history during the Division I era.

Spartan keeper Ellen Bright collected four saves and earned her first shutout of the season, as the Upstate defense limited VMI to just eight shots and two corner kicks.

"I was glad to see us come away with a victory in a hard fought game between both teams," USC Upstate head coach Abby Minihan said. "We had a couple of opportunities that could have put the game away, but we were able to withstand VMI's pressure to preserve the shutout."

Upstate improved to 4-0 all-time against VMI and has now won two of its last three road games this season.

The Spartans return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. when Upstate opens Atlantic Sun play by welcoming Northern Kentucky to County University Soccer Stadium.
