Upstate Drops 3-0 Decision at Presbyterian College

The USC Upstate volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (22-25, 23-25, 18-25) defeat to the Presbyterian College Blue Hose Tuesday evening in non-conference action from the Templeton Center.

Upstate falls to 9-6 on the season while the Blue Hose improve to 5-7.

Kayla Eversgerd, the reigning A-Sun Player of the Week, led the Spartans with eight kills and 14 digs, while Javon Gates and Emily Koelling each had seven kills. Alexa Lagaly added 13 digs, and Kaleigh Kelley and Dominique Arnold finished with 12 and 10, respectively. Lexi Gober also contributed 22 assists.

Rachel Hall led PC with a match-high 14 kills and Mary Trimpe had 19 digs. Ashtin Frank dished out 34 assists in the match.

Presbyterian College opened the first set scoring seven of nine points as Ashton Stewart and Johna Robbins teamed up for a block to put the Blue Hose ahead 7-2. Upstate used three straight PC errors to cut its deficit down to 10-7, but the Blue Hose would extend the lead out to five, 14-9, on a kill by Hall. A service error by Kelley later pushed Presbyterian College's lead to 16-11, only to see the Spartans answer with a 5-1 run to trail 17-16 as Eversgerd and Koelling combined for three straight kills. Arnold evened the set on the very next play with her kill. After Eversgerd gave Upstate its first lead of the set at 19-18, PC recorded three straight points to take the lead back 21-19 and force the Spartans into a timeout. Upstate came out of the break to equal things 22-22 as Eversgerd and Gates each picked up a kill. Presbyterian College scored the next three points after that to win the first set 25-22.

The teams split the opening six points of set two as back-to-back kills by Eversgerd made it 3-3 early. The Blue Hose then collected the next four points to lead 7-3, and pushed that advantage to 9-4 with a kill from Stewart. The Spartans, following a timeout, got to within two at 9-7 as they received two blocks in a row from Gates and Lagaly. Upstate would tie the set several plays later as an attack error by Rachel Elshoff made it 13-13, but Presbyterian College would respond take a 16-14 lead. The Spartans put together a 4-1 run to lead 18-17 on Hall's attack error. Although they would fall behind 21-18 after surrendering four consecutive points, the Spartans again rallied to cut PC's lead down to 24-23 on a kill by Lagaly. Frank gave the Blue Hose the set victory, 25-23, with her kill.

Upstate picked up the first two points of the third set on Frank's attack error and a service ace by Kelley. PC responded with a 9-2 run to lead by five after a solo block from Robbins. The Blue Hose led by at least four midway through the frame and would go in front 18-12 on an attack error by Arnold. The Spartans staged another rally by reeling off seven straight points as Arnold made the score 18-18 after her kill. Presbyterian College finished the set on a 7-0 run to win 25-18, and take the match 3-0.

Upstate opens A-Sun play Saturday afternoon as it hosts Kennesaw State at 3 p.m. in its first home match of the season.
